Forbidden root is a brewery in a former spacious theater with delicious craft beers. They have a wide range of beer flavors from fruity to dark and bold- There's something for everyone on the menu. The fried chicken sandwich was made from dark meat which enhanced the flavor and was very juicy! The mortadella sandwich was the perfect. The server was a bit cold but responsive. Would return to try more beers and other menu items!
I had a great meal at Forbidden Root. I had the duck and dumplings and thought it was great! The gnocchi was soft, the duck flavorful and the crispy duck skin was a real treat. Service was excellent. I think the only negatives worth mentioning at the environment can be a bit on the loud side - which is to be expected for this kind of place, but don't go expecting quiet. They do charge an additional fee to pay via credit card which I find incredibly annoying - just give a cash discount, rather than marking up the menu prices.
We stopped in for dinner yesterday and was pleasantly surprised with the food options, yes they have your typical bar snacks but the mains and salads are def not "usual bar food" which I loved. We just moved into the neighborhood and were expecting the usual brewery menu of lots of fried food options but not here. I had the carrot pasta which seemed like a risky dish but it was so so delicious, the flavors were so well paired and the creamy carrots sauce wasn't like anything I've had before. We also got the kale salad and it was one of the best kale salads I've ever had to be honest, the chickpea crunch and the citrusy dressing all so flavorful & fresh. The beer options were very good too, my husband enjoyed their flight, I had a few 5 oz pours all good. Our server was great not sure of her name but she has purple hair, she was so busy (seemed to be the only server for the whole place eek) but she was checking on us all / refilling waters, I didn't see her skip a beat. (I wish she had a bit more help tho tbh.) We will definitely be back for these dishes and to explore other ones as well.
The service has been exemplary both times I've gone to FR. The beers are delightfully delicious with a broad range of strength, flavor, and surprisingly color! The food was also top notch on my second visit, the first being beer only. The vibe is nice and quiet making conversations easy with the decor being rustic and inviting.
Neighborhood gem, particularly in the summer when the front is open to the street. Great beer selection and always some kind of unusual twist to try out, easier to decide if you have more than one. Decent wines too which makes my gf happy Food is delicious and enough of a mix that my no dairy is easy to accommodate Service is always spot on, even when they are busy. Just enough checking in that you don't lack anything but not intrusive and always knowledgeable about current beer list
My friends and I have come to FR a handful of times for drinks and snacks (their beer selection is wonderful - try a house flight or strawberry basil beer), but recently we came in for a full dinner and were all pretty blown away by the quality of the food. The mushroom pot pie is incredible, and we all also loved the mushroom cakes (what can I say, we like mushrooms) and Brussel sprout appetizers. My husband said the schnitzel sandwich was the closest thing to real schnitzel he's had in Europe, and our friends that split the burger had high praise as well. We all agreed the potato chips were a bit too salty, but it by no means ruined the meal and I'm excited to come back soon to try even more of the menu!
Such great food here! Upscale but large portions and hearty food. Different from the ravenswood location but equally good and fun. Great ambiance and casual for groups. Carrots were awesome, burger is a juicy smash burger, burrata is creamy, cheese plate doesn't look great but tastes awesome! Salad was a bit heavy on the vinegar so not for all palates but I enjoyed. Not pictured is the ranch chips which are incredible and a must have. We are so quick there was no evidence. Service was a bit slow but we weren't in a Hurry. Great work!
I celebrated my birthday dinner at Forbidden Root with a group of 18 people, and I highly recommend it! Unlike many other restaurants that struggle to accommodate large dinner parties, Forbidden Root handled our group seamlessly without any issues. They seated us as guests arrived, eliminating the need for everyone to wait, which made the experience fantastic. The food was exceptional! I opted for the Arugula Salad with Whipped Ricotta, Dried Peaches, Ricotta Salata, Shallot Vinaigrette, and Pine Nuts. Additionally, I enjoyed the Duck & Dumplings featuring Duck Confit, Ricotta Gnocchi, Mirepoix, Duck Jus, and Crispy Duck Skin. To complement the meal, I tried a Beer Flight, and I highly recommend the strawberry basil beer! The servers were outstanding, managing such a large party with efficiency and skill. My group was delighted, and we thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere. Forbidden Root caters well to various occasions, whether it's a birthday celebration, a romantic date, or simply a casual drink with friends. I'm definitely planning on coming back for another visit!
Went there for dinner recently. While I cannot drink alcohol, the restaurant still made me greatly satisfied! The food and service were both top-tier. For food I got the a chorizo empanada, a veggie empanada, butternut squash soup, and short rib entrée. My server asked for the order of food to be served, which was surprising to me as I did not expect a brewpub would care about such details! Anyway I got the two empanadas first. These were their Wednesday specials. The chorizo empanada had a slightly spicy kick. The veggie empanada was filled with potato, carrots, etc. Then I got the soup. It filled a large bowl which is indeed enough for a light meal! The soup was very creamy and tasted sweet. Highlight was the sage herb and brown butter solids, which added some distinct flavor to it. It was perhaps my favorite food. Finally I got the short rib entrée. Tasted good but kinda usual--the only creative point was the sweet drops, which surprisingly paired well with the savory meat. Service was great. The bartender asked my experience for each dish. The one who gave me the dishes introduced them. Above all, service was pretty quick! Another interesting point is the vibe. The restaurant looks like a large factory haha. Very spacious. Love the floor height. And you can see them brewing at the back of the restaurant! In general it was a great dining experience. The restaurant was not just for having drinks, but also great for individual dining. Will go there again the next time I go to Chicago!
Came here for a weekend in Chicago. We wanted to try different foods and we had just been to trendy restaurants. The food as great, good selection of draft beers on tap. Short rib- nice and tender meat Duck & dumplings - felt like a gnocchi dumpling. It was good because it was different than what I eat at restaurants
